The Community Gardens Network of Hastings Prince Edward has emerged from the community engagement “What Matters to You” campaign launched by Hastings and Prince Edward Counties Public Health through the Healthy Communities Partnership.
Initiated by Public Health, CGN is an independent umbrella organization that addresses the need in our regional community that has been identified through public consultation. CGN offers a collaborative approach to support organizations, individuals, and educators establish and sustain new and existing community gardens, CSA community supported and urban agriculture through educational programmes, resources and planning.
Poor nutrition is significant factor in chronic disease, especially in communities where fresh produce is often hard to find and/or too expensive. Community gardens are shared spaces where people can go to grow food. They help promote food security and healthy eating for people in the community by increasing physical and economic access to healthy food. Community gardens become meeting places and help build social connections. Community gardens are an important step in making healthy, local food accessible to all.
